Rajahmundry Member of Parliament Daggubati Purandhareshwari said that sports are as important as education for the development of the country.

The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex (Arena-2) is built at a cost of Rs. 13.76 crore in VLPuram was held on Wednesday.

MP Purandhareshwari and Municipal Commissioner Rahul Meena participated as chief guests in the program held under the chairmanship of MLA Adireddy Srinivas and performed the Bhoomi Puja.

She said that the central government is providing extensive encouragement to the sports sector through the Khelo India program. She said that the aim is to provide necessary infrastructure and training to talented athletes in rural areas.

She said that special assistance is being provided to athletes who excel at the international level through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

She said that the state government has sanctioned Rs. 28 crores for Arena-1 being constructed in Rajahmundry and the central government has sanctioned Rs. 13.76 crores for Arena-2. She said that state-of-the-art sports facilities will be provided in the city with the cooperation of the central and state governments.

Rajahmundry Urban MLA Adireddy Srinivas said that this is a historic moment in the sports history of Rajahmundry. He said that the coalition government has brought into fruition the indoor sports complex, which has been a dream of athletes for decades. He said that development is being carried out to make Rajahmundry a venue for national and international level sports competitions in the future.

Municipal Commissioner Rahul Meena said that steps are being taken to develop Rajahmundry, which has been known as the cultural capital till now, as a sports center. He said that after the completion of Arena-1, Arena-2 and Arena-3, this complex will stand as one of the best sports complexes in the state.

This sports complex, which is being built with state-of-the-art facilities, has a total of 13 courts, a viewing facility for thousands of spectators, international standard flooring, LED lighting, ventilation and security systems. He explained that this complex is being developed for badminton, basketball, volleyball and other sports.
