Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has stressed the urgent need to protect the ecologically important Kolleru Lake and address the problems faced by the locals with a humane approach. On Monday, a comprehensive review was held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on the court judgments, regulations, central orders, local conditions and environmental and contour-related issues related to Kolleru.

Around 3 lakh people live in the Kolleru contour area and they have been facing difficulties for years.  From 2014 to 2019, the TDP government made significant efforts to address these problems. In 2018, the National Wildlife Board recommended exclusion of 20,000 acres of jirayat and D-patta lands from the Kolleru Sanctuary and proposed new boundaries. A recommendation was sent to the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) accordingly.

However, after raising objections, the Centre sought the opinion of the state government. Now, the coalition government led by CM Chandrababu Naidu is committed to resolving this.

Kolleru should not become a polluted cesspool. The sewage entering the lake should be properly treated. Unobstructed discharge of canals is polluting Kolleru – this should be stopped. Encroachments and silt on the salt flats should be removed. All outlets should be completely opened so that water flows freely into the sea, Chandrababu said.

There are 20,000 acres of Jirayat and D-patta lands. In view of the ongoing contour issues, justice should be done to these farmers first.

For the sake of environmental greenness, educational institutions, hospitals, government offices, bus stations and along roads with proper tree guards
He instructed the officials to start a massive tree plantation campaign on June 5 with the aim of planting one crore saplings.  Chandrababu suggested that collectors, ministers and public representatives should actively participate.

He suggested that corporate partnerships should be encouraged under CSR to increase greenery in reserved forest areas.

In the Amaravati region, all reserved forest areas should be developed using the Miyawaki method, he said, and tangible results would be seen in three years. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Vijay Anand and senior officials.
