AMARAVATI; Telugu Desam Party (TDP) state president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao has hailed the central government’s gazette notification for the formation of the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters, calling it a “historic milestone”.
He said the tireless efforts of state Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu were the main reason for the formation of the zone. Srinivas Rao said that the Chief Minister had made serious efforts at the national level to ensure that the promises made under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act became a reality.
“The slogan ‘Visakha Railway Zone is Andhra’, raised by TDP MPs between 2014 and 2019, has finally reached its destination,” he said. Although the zone was initially announced in 2019, the project was delayed between 2019-2024 due to the “negligent attitude” and “administrative inertia” of the previous YSRCP government, especially in the crucial land acquisition issue.
The TDP leader stressed that the process was started on a “war footing” as soon as the NDA coalition came to power in 2024.
According to a gazette notification issued on May 4, 2026, the South Coast Railway Zone, which includes Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions, will start full-scale operations from June 1, Srinivasa Rao said.
Srinivasa Rao praised the coordination between the state and central governments. He acknowledged the roles played by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, Visakhapatnam MP Bharat, Union Ministers Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Dr. Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, and local representatives in this regard.
Srinivas Rao said that efforts to revive the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, along with the city’s establishment as a top global hub, will help to cement the city’s position as a top global hub.
