The latest developments make it clear that the ties between India and the US are gradually deteriorating. Recently, the US, which pressured and convinced Prime Minister Modi to stop India’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in the middle and initiate a ceasefire, unilaterally announced that India had promised to give them a 100 percent tariff exemption. Before recovering from these two shocks, the US gave India another shock.

Authorities stopped 15 shipments of mangoes from India to the US at various airports in the country. They were prevented from entering the country by citing the lack of proper documents. Their value is 5 lakh US dollars. This is 4.28 lakhs in Indian currency. As a result, the farmers were faced with the situation of having to take them back to India or destroy them there.  As a result, they are destroying the mangoes there, as they cannot afford to pay the transportation charges to bring them back to India.

The US authorities have blocked mangoes from India at several airports including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta, possibly on orders from the government. This has caused huge losses to Indian farmers who sent mangoes there. With this incident, farmers are once again facing a situation where they cannot dare to send mangoes to the US. In fact, India exports the largest number of mangoes to the US, but the decision taken by the US seems to have shocked even the Centre.

In a situation where the Indian government has been condemning Trump’s statements on the ceasefire and the subsequent tariffs, the rejection of this mango has become a topic of discussion in both countries. However, neither the US nor India has officially revealed the intention behind this.
