AMARAVATI – Bureau Chief- Raja Pentapati.
The death of eight workers and serious injury to six others in the Visakhapatnam steel plant accident is extremely painful.

The family of each worker who lost their life in the accident will be given an immediate compensation of Rs. 25 lakhs and one of the family members will be provided a job in the plant. The workers who are seriously injured and undergoing treatment in the hospital will be given a compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs each, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Pawan Kalyan announced.
Permanent employees will be given Rs. 1.72 crores under retirement benefits and Rs. 45.75 lakhs for contract employees, he said, adding that the entire medical expenses of the injured will be borne by the plant management.
A three-member committee of the Bokaro Steel Plant will conduct a thorough investigation into the accident and further action will be taken based on the committee report.
Speaking to the media after visiting the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant accident site on Tuesday morning, the coalition government will fully support the families of every worker who lost their lives and was seriously injured in the accident.
We will ensure that justice is done to the victims. The education of the children of the steel plant employees will continue in the same way as the education of the children of the deceased workers is currently going on.
Until the employee who died in the accident reaches the retirement age, their family members can continue living in the steel plant quarters where they are currently staying for free.
If the affected families currently living in rented houses outside the steel plant township want to move into the plant quarters, they will also be allotted quarters inside the township. We will take steps to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.
Further decisions will be made based on the report given by the three-member committee on the accident. Not from one angle.. If details are collected from all sides, the matter will be clear. When such accidents happen, it is not about feeling sorry.. It should be ensured that it does not happen again.
I spoke to the workers at the scene. They expressed their concern that proper safety standards were not followed. The workers allege that the management has neglected to modernize the plant and that such major accidents are happening due to the use of old equipment and machinery that are decades old without replacing them.
In the past 36 years of the steel plant’s operational history, there has never been an incident where a ladle bucket carrying liquid steel exploded on this scale and claimed so many lives.
There are records of some industrial accidents in foreign steel plants like China and France in the past. But, there have not been any such incidents of a boiling liquid steel bucket exploding on such a large scale. This type of explosion is extremely rare.
The three-member committee will soon reach Visakhapatnam. They will personally inspect the steel melting shop section where the accident occurred. Why did the actual explosion occur before the slide gate of the ladle bucket carrying liquid steel was opened? Is it a technical fault? Is there any other problem? They will investigate in depth from all angles and submit a report to the government.

Only when trade unions work beyond politics can true justice be done for workers. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said that his government’s resolve is to ensure that the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant flourishes wonderfully in the future and that such horrific accidents will never happen again.
