Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has urged the central government to take initiative to overcome the severe crisis faced by the Totapuri mango farmers in the state.
To this end, the CM has written a letter to Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He has appealed to implement the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme- PDPS under market intervention.
The letter states that the prices of Totapuri have fallen in the market due to international developments, the export of mango pulp has stopped and the industries have stopped purchasing. The Chief Minister has requested the Centre to provide financial assistance of Rs. 281 crore to support the mango farmers.
Chandrababu explained that Andhra Pradesh is the leader in mango production in the country, with an output of 52.65 lakh metric tons being grown across 3.99 lakh hectares across the state. He said that the Totapuri variety is grown in about 91,011 hectares in the districts of Chittoor, Tirupati, Annamaya and Kadapa in the Rayalaseema region.
He said that this is the source of livelihood for lakhs of farmer families, with an output of 8.65 lakh metric tons. However, the letter explained the situation that mango farmers are in trouble due to the increase in investment costs and the collapse of market prices in the current season.
In this situation, the state government has taken the initiative and is implementing a market intervention scheme for the purchase of 7.03 lakh metric tons of Totapuri mangoes. As part of this, it has been decided to give an additional Rs. 4 per kg to mango farmers.

In a letter to the Union Minister, the Chief Minister has requested the Centre to provide support under the PDPS to this extent… and to ensure that the Central Government implements the Market Intervention Scheme for these purchases to be made from June to August this year.
