TDP MLA Adireddy Srinivas explained in the Legislative Assembly that the government should take steps to permanently eradicate the problem of beggars in Andhra Pradesh and provide them with self-employment. There are chances of anti-social activities taking place in the beggars’ hideouts, and that rehabilitation measures should be taken for them before the upcoming Godavari Pushkarams.

The central government has taken up a program called Smile 75 to eliminate begging. Also, steps are being taken to eliminate begging in some states, especially in the state of Rajasthan, through the ‘Bikshu Orientation and Rehabilitation (BOR)’ program.
TDP Rajahmundry City MLA Adireddy Srinivas (Vasu) mentioned in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly that steps are being taken to provide employment to beggars by training them in skills like plumbing, electrical works, and sewing, etc
They should be kept away from begging and if necessary, they should be provided employment. MLA Vasu raised this issue in the Assembly with the permission of Deputy Speaker Raghurama Krishnam Raju as part of the Legislative Assembly sessions.
Similarly, MLA Vasu said that the Beggar Free Campaign was launched in Indore, Madhya Pradesh in 2024. He said that through such programs, shelter is being provided to beggars and they are being made to stay away from this profession. He said that inspired by the programs being taken up by neighboring states, we also need to make sure that no one depends on begging.
Especially since Rajahmundry is an urban area, there are many people who come to beg from surrounding areas, and the government has already provided night shelter to 80 people and provided them with food, he said.
A big city is visited by many tourists, and there are also situations that divert beggars in different ways, especially under the guise of anti-social activities, and therefore, rehabilitation and employment measures are needed to provide them with some kind of profession, MLA Vasu said.
He said that even though steps were taken to pay them by putting them in bottle picking and recycling programs, they were gradually given to the agency and that they were also lost.
He said that if rehabilitation measures are not taken now, difficult situations will arise, and moreover, since the Godavari Pushkaram is also approaching, MLA Vasu urged the government to take the programs being taken for beggars in other states as a role model and take rehabilitation measures.
