8 more Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) will be set up in government hospitals in the state for newborn babies, Health Minister Shri Satyakumar Yadav said in a statement today. He said that 80 additional warmers will be made available through these.
Each SNCU will cost Rs. 60 lakhs, while the total cost for 8 SNCUs will be Rs. 4.80 crores. Also, each SNCU will cost Rs. He said that the cost of running 8 SNCUs of Rs. 8.91 lakh each will be approximately Rs. 1.07 crore.
These 8 SNCUs will be run under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Services will be available at Amalapuram Area Hospital in Konaseema district, Kuppam Area Hospital in Chittoor district, Guntakal Area Hospital in Anantapur district and Emmiganur CHC in Kurnool district by the end of this month.
The new SNCUs will be available in the Nujiveedu Area Hospital in Eluru district, Kavali Area Hospital in Nellore district, Kadiri Area Hospital in Sathyasai district and Srikalahasti Area Hospital in Tirupati district in November.
The Minister said that 62 SNCUs are already functioning in the teaching, district and area hospitals and community health centres (CHCs) in the state, of which 28 are run by the government. The existing 10 warmers in 11 SNCUs and 5 warmers in 23 SNCUs are providing emergency treatment to the needy infants. These centers provide advanced medical care to newborns.
Since the coalition government came to power, the Health Department has already set up newborn care centers in Anakapalle, Prathipadu, Hindupur and Nandyal. The Newborn Stabilization Unit in Sattenapalli has also been upgraded to SNCU. In addition, 8 more SNCUs are to be set up.

Services are provided in special newborn care centers from birth to 28 days.
The minister said that newborns with problems like low birth weight, neonatal jaundice, hypothermia, ARDS (respiratory distress syndrome), and sepsis will be treated here.
