After crossing many milestones in its 75-year-long existence, CTRI’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations kicked off in Rajahmundry on Wednesday.  Dr. DK Yadava, Assistant Director General, Seed Commercial Crops, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the festival.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. DK Yadava said that it started as a small research center in Guntur in 1947 and has grown into a large scale and has become the only prestigious research institute for tobacco crops in the country.

Scientists want to work hard to create high-yielding varieties that can withstand adverse weather conditions. He said that tobacco cultivation is labor intensive and mechanization should be encouraged to reduce the labor of labourers. Dr. DK Yadav, Assistant Director General of Commercial Crops, said that high yields can be achieved if good management practices along with quality seeds and timely crop protection measures are taken.

Alternative products from the tobacco crop should be encouraged and scientists should conduct research and provide them to the farmers. He said that among the agricultural products exported from our country, tobacco crops are preferred. There are 25 thousand hectares of flower plant nurseries in Kadiam and requested to set up a special research center for this purpose.
