Amaravati: The Sri Kodanda Ramaswamy Temple in Ontimitta (also known as Vontimitta), located in the YSR Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, is an ancient site.

It houses a unique monolithic idol depicting Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana in a standing posture. Its construction took place in various phases between the 11th and 17th centuries, under the patronage of Chola, Vijayanagara, and local rulers. Legends attribute the temple’s origins to two devotees named Vontudu and Mittudu. The temple gained significant prominence following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

History of the Temple
Construction of this temple, which began around the 11th century and spanned several centuries, was initially advanced by the Chola kings. Subsequently, in 1356, Vijayanagara emperors—such as Bukkaraya—initiated key structural developments.

The renowned Telugu poet Bammera Pothana dedicated his magnum opus, the Bhagavatam, at this very site, while the composer Annamayya penned hymns in praise of the presiding deity.

The French traveler Tavernier visited the temple in 1652 and described it as one of the most beautiful temples in India.

According to local legend, Lord Rama rested at this site during his exile in the forest; consequently, sages requested that He remain here permanently. The monolithic sculpture located here is referred to as ‘Ekasilanagaram.’

Arrangements by the AP Government
The Government of Andhra Pradesh—in coordination with the Endowments Department and the TTD—is overseeing comprehensive arrangements for the events and festivities scheduled for March 27, including the continuous distribution of Anna Prasadam (sacred food), free ₹50 laddus, drinking water, and buttermilk.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will present silk robes during the Kalyanotsavam (celestial wedding ceremony) taking place on April 1.

The TTD has established Annadana centers (free food distribution centers), temporary kitchens, electrical illuminations, LED lighting, and Public Address (PA) systems at a cost of ₹4 crores.

Prioritizing the safety of devotees, district officials—in collaboration with the police and other departmental officers—have reviewed arrangements regarding transportation (APSRTC), parking, accommodation facilities, and maintenance works. This Kalyanotsavam will be broadcast live globally via SVBC.
