Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu told the officials that the previous government had completely destroyed the AP Fiber Net project, which was ambitiously brought in the state between 2014-19… and that it should be put back on track.
The CM held a review with the officials at the Secretariat on Monday on the challenges facing the organization, financial problems, steps to be taken to fully implement Fiber Net, and new policy decisions.
The CM said that the previous government had used the system that was supposed to be useful for the people, students, and government departments for political purposes… and this has damaged the objective of the Fiber Net project. The CM reminded that while there were 8.70 lakh connections in 2019… their number has come down to 4.50 lakh under the YSRCP government.
In the past, we ran the organization brilliantly with 130 employees… We provided more than 8 lakh connections… But the YSRCP government created posts that did not exist in the organization for its party workers. It increased the number of 130 employees to 1,350 and looted them. The previous government was involved in a new type of corruption where hundreds and thousands of people were appointed in government institutions… and made to work for the party. They appointed their own people in Fiber Net and made work for the party.
Those responsible for this should be identified. An investigation should be conducted into the appointments of the past… and all the details should be brought to light. At the same time, necessary steps should be taken to correct the mistakes of the past and shape the future.” The CM said. The CM suggested that the current number of connections up to 4,53,525 should be increased from 8 lakh to 10 lakh.
As part of this program, the Central Government will sanction Rs. 1,900 crore for AP Fiber Net from 2025 to 2035. The Chief Minister has approved the conversion of the fiber network of 1,692 gram panchayats in Chittoor and Visakhapatnam districts from linear to ring architecture.
480 new gram panchayats will be provided connectivity with ring architecture. The Center will provide a total of Rs. 430 crore for this. The CM suggested that a special purpose vehicle (SPV) be formed in collaboration with the Central and State governments to manage these programs.
The fiber network should be strengthened in rural and backward areas. The pending issues of local cable operators should be resolved.
So far, 12,946 gram panchayats in the state have been connected to the network. Fiber net facility has been provided to the panchayats. 104 government institutions and offices have fiber net connections. Currently, fiber net connections are being provided to homes in the form of 5 packages. More than 21,000 institutions are getting high-speed broadband. 175 have been linked to telecom towers. The state government is trying to develop this further.
So far, 78,355 km. of fiber net has been spread across the state, and the government’s goal is to lay a total of 2 lakh km. of fiber net lines. Andhra Pradesh is ahead of all the states in the country in fiber net area. Andhra Pradesh is followed by Maharashtra with 50,481 km., Tamil Nadu with 49,616 km., Gujarat with 35,246 km., and Telangana with 29,143 km. of fiber net.
