AMARAVATI: AP state women commission chairperson Dr. Rayapati Sailaja told, While women have made significant strides in educational and employment opportunities compared to the past, there remains a need for them to advance even further.

She emphasized that the encouragement of women across all sectors must begin within the home itself. She called for the fostering of a culture that views men and women equally, without any gender-based discrimination.

True women’s empowerment becomes a reality only when women cultivate leadership qualities and act with independence. She participated as the Chief Guest at an event titled “Barriers & Building Futures: Women in Leadership in the Contemporary World.” This program was organized by the Society for Public Law and Governance at the VIT-AP School of Law in Amaravati.

She noted that despite the implementation of a 33 percent reservation for women in local bodies, the actual authority associated with these positions often remains in the hands of men. She urged for an end to this practice, advocating instead for women to exercise their roles with complete autonomy.

She further suggested that colleges and universities should grant maternity leave to female students upon marriage, ensuring that their education is not interrupted. She also asserted that women’s representation in Parliament and State Assemblies must increase, enabling them to play a pivotal role in the legislative bodies responsible for formulating laws.

Finally, she emphasized that the safety and protection of women are not the responsibility of any single individual, but rather a collective responsibility shared by the entire society.

She stated that the Women’s Commission is actively working against societal ills such as child marriages, teenage pregnancies, and misleading content on social media, and issued a call for society at large to join in this effort.

The role of women in the development of society is absolutely pivotal. She emphasized that women serve as strong pillars—not merely for their families, but also for society and for the very task of nation-building.

The Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission is continuously striving to safeguard women’s rights, ensure they receive justice, and enhance their safety. Rayapati Sailaja clarified that the Commission views it as a primary responsibility not only to resolve women’s issues but also to empower them through awareness-building.
