The fellowship programme will serve as an opportunity to learn new techniques in laparoscopic cancer surgeries (oncology), sharpen skills and earn the prestigious FALS Oncology certification through IAGES, said organizing chairman Dr. Krishnamurthy (Karnataka).

The three-day fellowship programme is being held at the Smart Lab of GSL Medical College, Rajanagaram, Andhra Pradesh, till November 16. 75 practicing surgeons and 60 junior doctors from across the country are participating.

All of them are laparoscopic surgeons and people with an interest in oncology surgeries.

The first two days (November 14, 15) will feature intensive lectures by senior surgeons, video sessions on advanced surgeries and panel discussions. Through these sessions, experts will share techniques related to complex oncology surgeries.

On the last day, November 16, a ‘Hands-on Surgical Workshop’ will be conducted by surgeons to directly practice the skills. This will be followed by examinations in the form of MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) and Viva (Oral Exam) for the fellowship candidates.

Those who clear these examinations will be awarded FALS Oncology Certification by IAGES. Dr. Tarun Gogineni, Surgical Oncologist and Organizing Secretary, explained that arrangements have been made for the participants to watch, ask questions and discuss live surgeries being performed at the theatres of GSL General Hospital and GSL Independent Hospital in Rajahmundry.

Chief Patron Dr. Ganni Bhaskara Rao announced that the top three surgeons who score the highest marks in the post-course examination will be awarded 3 months of free training on two leading robotic systems. He explained that this program will greatly help surgeons in mastering advanced technology.
