AMARAVATI: State Medical and Health Minister Sri Satyakumar Yadav has called on government departments and citizens to work together to prevent road accidents. He said that government departments, especially transport and police departments, should take precautions where necessary to prevent road accidents.
He revealed that the medical and health department is ready to provide immediate high-quality medical care to those injured in unfortunate road accidents.
A coordination meeting of government departments on the implementation of the ‘PM-RAHAT’ – PM RAHAT (Road Accident Victim Hospitalization and Assured Treatment) scheme was held at the NTR Health Sciences University in Vijayawada on Thursday.
Minister Sri Satyakumar, who was the chief guest, said that the PM Rahat scheme will provide relief to the injured. It was revealed that the PM Rahat scheme, which aims to provide free medical treatment of Rs. 1.5 lakh within an hour of the accident, will be implemented for everyone regardless of financial circumstances.
If Rs. 1.5 lakh is not enough to provide medical treatment to any of the eligible people, the remaining amount will be borne by the NTR Medical Service Trust.
He said that services are currently available in 656 government and private hospitals in the state under PM Rahat. He said that out of 71,108 road accident cases registered under emergency medical services (108) in 2024, 23,810 people (33%) received treatment in hospitals within the golden hour itself.
He said that the steps taken by Prime Minister Modi at the Center and CM Chandrababu Naidu in the state keeping in mind the health care of the people are yielding positive results.
State Medical and Health Department Secretary Saurabh Gaur said that 108 emergency medical services will be linked with 112 (National Helpline Number) by the end of this month. Also, starting from the 20th of this month, training programs will be conducted for hospitals and employees on the implementation and awareness of the PM-Rahat scheme until the 15th of next month.
Also, medical services will be made available under PM-Rahat in at least 1500 hospitals under the NTR Vaidya Seva Trust. Special meetings (road safety) will be held in all districts on the prevention of road accidents.

Venkateswara Rao, Joint Commissioner of the Transport Department, said that 82% of road accidents are due to human error.
The government has ordered a review of the implementation of this scheme at the level of district collectors every month.
