AMARAVATI: The government has started working towards municipal elections in Andhra Pradesh. In a cabinet meeting held in Amaravati, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu discussed with the ministers specifically and advised them to prepare to hold the elections in the next three to four months.

He ordered to speed up coordination with the Election Commission, revision of voter lists, and redivision of wards. Since the new census is not completed, there are chances of holding the elections based on the 2011 census.

Stating that the local body elections are a time to reflect the performance of the government, the CM clarified that development programs should be accelerated. He advised the officials to focus on improving infrastructure like roads, drainage, and drinking water supply in urban areas. It was decided to increase the use of technology and further strengthen the administrative system to conduct transparent and dispute-free elections.

The state is currently under the rule of special officers as the terms of municipalities, city panchayats and municipal corporations have expired. In this context, holding elections has also become politically crucial. While the ruling party is moving forward with its development agenda, the opposition parties are sharpening their strategies. The upcoming municipal elections will be a key test that will determine the political direction of the state.
