AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, on March 26, 2026, passed a resolution requesting the Central Government to amend the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 by declaring Amaravati as the sole capital of the state.

The resolution was passed in the wake of the High Court order of March 3, 2022. Its objective is to provide a permanent legal status to avoid future disputes.

Legislative Assembly Session

The special session of the AP Legislative Assembly began on March 28, 2026 (today). After about four hours of debate, Naidu moved the resolution for discussion and approval.

It will then be sent to the Centre for parliamentary approval.

Background Information

Naidu has been advocating Amaravati as the sole capital since 2014, rejecting the proposal of three capitals proposed by the previous YSRCP government.

This move also includes updating the CRDA Act and clearly including the name of Amaravati.  This is in line with the ongoing development works worth Rs 49,000 crore that have been resumed recently.

Once the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passes the resolution declaring Amaravati as the sole capital, it will be formally sent to the Union government for consideration.

Central Consideration

The Centre will review the resolution and is likely to introduce an amendment bill in Parliament to amend Section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, clearly specifying Amaravati as the capital.

The move has been taken on the advice of the Union government to avoid legal complications arising from potential actions during the ongoing sessions of Parliament.

Final Steps

Once the Parliament passes the Bill, it will be given the President’s assent, which will lead to a gazette notification giving permanent legal status to Amaravati.

The state can separately amend the CRDA Act to include “Amaravati” in the place of “new state capital”.
