Today, March 4, the Jayanti (birth anniversary) of Bulusu Sambamurthy, a prominent freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, was celebrated in his honor.

AMARAVATI: Bulusu Sambamurthy was born in Dulla village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, where great personalities like Bulusu Sambamurthy were born. Along with his high education, he also selflessly served the country and the people in his own style.

Early life Bulusu Sambamurthy was born on March 4, 1886 in Dulla village in East Godavari district (then part of Madras Presidency) in a family of Telugu Vaidiki Velanadu Brahmin Vedic scholars.

His father Subbavadhanulu was a Vedic scholar.  He studied physics at Maharaja’s College, Vizianagaram, worked as a lecturer for a while, then graduated in law in 1911 and practiced as a criminal lawyer in Kakinada.

In the freedom struggle In 1926, he proposed ‘Purna Swaraj’ (complete independence) at the Lahore session of the Congress, before many leaders who still wanted a dominant position.

In 1930, he led the Salt Satyagraha at Chollangi near Kakinada, vowing not to eat salt until the tax was lifted, and was imprisoned in Vellore Jail after his arrest on April 18, 1930.

In his political career, elected on a Congress ticket in the 1937 Madras Presidency Assembly elections, he served as the President of the Madras Legislative Council from 1937 to 1942, resigning for the Quit India Movement.

He strongly supported the Andhra movement for a separate Telugu state, and in 1952, he sheltered Potti Sriramulu, who was on a fast unto death in Chennai, which led to the formation of Andhra state.

Legacy Sambamurthy died on February 2, 1958, in Kakinada at the age of 71.

His contribution to freedom, satyagraha and the formation of a regional state is remembered annually, especially in East Godavari, and he will remain in the annals of history and the annals of freedom fighters.
