As part of the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu will lay the foundation stone tomorrow in Kakinada for the country’s first eco-friendly mega green ammonia plant. Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan will also participate in this program.

Last year in January, the state government granted approvals to AM Green, a part of the Greenko Group, to set up a plant with an investment of Rs. 13,000 crore and a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MMTA) of green ammonia.

Unlike grey and blue ammonia, which are produced using coal, oil, and natural gas, this green ammonia is completely eco-friendly and does not emit any carbon emissions.

As the world is rapidly moving towards decarbonization and net-zero emission targets, green hydrogen and green ammonia are emerging as future fuels. In this context, the AM Green ammonia project in Kakinada will be a source of pride for the entire country.

Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited’s existing grey ammonia plant is being redeveloped into a green ammonia plant through a brownfield conversion. AM Green is setting up this plant on 495 acres with an investment of ₹13,000 crore. The project is expected to create employment opportunities for approximately 2,600 young people, and production is anticipated to begin by the end of 2027.

The AM Green ammonia plant’s proximity to the Kakinada port provides an excellent opportunity to export ammonia to countries worldwide. AM Green has already signed an agreement with Uniper SE of Germany to export 125 kilotons per annum (KTPA) of green ammonia starting in 2028.

This project, being developed with the support of international partners such as Petronas of Malaysia, GIC of Singapore, and ADIA of the UAE, is expected to receive significant international recognition. In addition to this project, AM Green is also setting up a 2-gigawatt electrolyzer manufacturing unit in Kakinada at an estimated cost of ₹2,000 crore.
