District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar stated that the crisis management team worked tirelessly for six days to bring the flames spreading from the ONGC borewell in Irusumanda village completely under control by Saturday evening, and successfully capped the borewell to permanently prevent gas leakage.
On Sunday, the local Member of Parliament, along with the MLA, District SP, and ONGC senior officials, inspected the capping work. Speaking on the occasion, the District Collector said that on January 5th, gas and subsequently flames erupted from the ONGC Mori 5 gas well in the Irusumanda village of Malkipuram mandal, causing panic among the surrounding residents.
He stated that due to the extensive cooperation of the people of Irusumanda, Lakkavaram, Gubbalavari Palem, and Chintapalli villages with the government machinery during this crisis management operation, there were no major difficulties in the temporary relief and rehabilitation programs, and the people acted with complete restraint. He added that now that the flames are completely under control, the borewell has been permanently filled with soil.
The Collector assured that the district administration will always stand by the people. It was announced that ex-gratia payments would be provided to the people of these four villages and that statistics were being compiled on the losses incurred to agricultural and horticultural crops.
It was stated that insurance schemes would be extended to the affected families. It was also mentioned that a District Crisis Management Committee would be constituted soon, and henceforth, based on the committee’s report, measures would be taken to provide compensation to the victims of disasters.

They urged ONGC senior officials to come forward to provide timely compensation to the affected families. They also instructed ONGC representatives that henceforth, before conducting any operations, information must be compulsorily provided to the residents within a 5-kilometer radius of the operational area, and necessary precautionary measures must be taken.
