AMARAVATI: AP CM Chandrababu Naidu, during his Delhi visit, focused on the central government on key water resources issues related to the state.

On Tuesday, he met the Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil appealed for approvals and financial assistance for several irrigation projects in the state. He informed the Union Minister in detail that these projects are very important for the interests of the state, the future of farmers and the security of drinking water.

AP strongly voiced its objections to the Karnataka government’s proposal to raise the height of the Almatti Dam on the upper Krishna. They expressed concern that raising the height of the dam would have a serious impact on the flow of water to AP downstream.

In the meeting, the Chief Minister mainly mentioned several issues related to the Polavaram project, which is the lifeblood of the state. He asked for the permanent lifting of the “stop work order” that is hindering the project work.

He asked for reimbursement of the increased cost due to increasing the capacity of the right and left canals.  Also, he requested that additional funds of about Rs. 32,000 crores be required for Phase-II, which involves land acquisition and rehabilitation, and that they be sanctioned immediately.

Later, he explained about the Polavaram-Nallamalasagar Link Project, which is proposed with the aim of diverting Godavari flood waters to rain-deficient areas like Rayalaseema. He requested that this project be given approval as part of the National River Linking Policy and that technical and financial assistance be provided.

CM Chandrababu also focused on resolving inter-state water disputes. He requested that the final report of the tribunal to resolve the Vamsadhara river water dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha be published in the Gazette immediately, thus paving the way for the construction of the Neradi Barrage.

In the wake of the ongoing dispute over the sharing of Godavari waters between
AP and Telangana, he requested that a Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal be constituted immediately to resolve it.
