The Meteorological Department has issued warnings that the low pressure formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is likely to turn into a severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal by Sunday and strengthen into a cyclone in the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday morning. The District Collector has issued warnings asking the people of Godavari districts to be alert.
In this context, District Collector Kirti Chekuri held a meeting with the officials at Bommur Collectorate on Saturday morning and directed them on the precautions to be taken.
Due to this cyclone, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to fall across the state in the next five days, and heavy to very heavy rains are likely to fall in East Godavari district on October 27 and 28, and gusty winds at a speed of 100 to 120 kmph are likely, the Collector said.
The Collector directed all the departments to be alert at the district level, and directed the Police Department to establish security in weak bunds and low-lying areas, and the Revenue Department to identify houses and old government buildings in a dangerous condition and make arrangements to move people to safer places.
The Irrigation Department was instructed to inspect the river and canal banks, identify and strengthen the weak points, and keep adequate cement bags and bamboo poles ready. The Roads & Buildings Department and NHAI were instructed to inspect and repair the weak points of bridges, culverts and roads.
The Medical & Health Department was instructed to keep necessary medicines and personnel ready to prevent diseases during floods, and the Animal Husbandry Department was instructed to move animals from Lankan lands to safe places in advance and keep adequate stocks of animal feed.
The Agriculture, Horticulture and Fisheries Departments were instructed to guide farmers and fishermen on the precautions to be taken during rains and storms. Fishermen were instructed to take precautionary measures not to go into the sea.
The Civil Supplies Department and the Marketing Department were instructed to prepare an advance plan to supply essential commodities, vegetables and grains to the relief camps and to keep adequate stocks at each FPS.
The Fire Department was instructed to prepare sufficient life jackets, life buoys and rescue equipment.
The Collector ordered that a command control room be opened in the District Collector’s office and that representatives of all departments should be available there and daily situation reports should be submitted.
It was suggested that government and private buildings in dilapidated condition should be identified and demolished, and saws and JCBs should be kept ready to remove fallen trees. The electricity authorities were instructed to make arrangements for quick restoration in case of a power outage.
