The Lokayukta raids on the house of a retired government official in Madhya Pradesh have created a big sensation. The searches conducted by the authorities on Thursday on the residences and other properties of the Public Works Department (PWD) retired Chief Engineer G.P. Mehra revealed a huge amount of illegal assets. The officials were shocked to see not only cash and gold, but also 17 tonnes of honey.
With solid information that there were assets beyond the income, the Lokayukta teams led by DSP rank officers simultaneously launched raids in four areas of Bhopal and Narmadapuram.
Cash worth Rs 8.79 lakh, jewellery worth around Rs 50 lakh and fixed deposit certificates worth Rs 56 lakh were found at Mehra’s residence in Manipur Colony, Bhopal. Searches were conducted at another house in the nearby Opal Regency Apartments, and Rs 26 lakh in cash, 2.6 kg of gold worth Rs 3.05 crore and 5.5 kg of silver were found. Counting machines had to be used to count the cash found.
However, what surprised everyone was his farmhouse in Sohagpur, Narmadapuram district. There, the authorities found 17 tonnes of honey in one go. In addition, 32 cottages under construction, seven cottages already completed, six tractors, a pond for fish farming, a cowshed and a temple were also found in the same premises. Luxury cars like Ford Endeavour, Skoda Slavia, Kia Sonet and Maruti Ciaz were also seized.
Searches were also conducted at KT Industries in Govindpura, which is believed to be Mehra’s benami company, and several key documents were seized along with Rs 1.25 lakh in cash. In total, more than Rs 36 lakh in cash, 2.6 kg of gold, 5.5 kg of silver, various fixed deposits, insurance documents and shared documents have been identified so far, Lokayukta officials said.
The value of the assets is still being calculated, and it is estimated that its value is in the several crores. Officials explained that forensic teams are examining the seized documents and a detailed investigation is being conducted into Mehra’s financial transactions
