As it is estimated that about six crore devotees will take holy dip in the upcoming Holy Godavari Pushkaram, the East Godavari District Collector has instructed the officials to start work on issues like infrastructure, crowd management, transport system, accommodation, food, medical services and cleanliness.
On Friday, the Collector held a review meeting with the relevant departments on the plans and preparedness for the arrangements for the Godavari Pushkaram at the Rajamahendravaram Collectorate.
In the meeting, police, town planning, irrigation and municipal corporation officials explained the arrangements being made for the Pushkaram through a power point presentation.
It was suggested that the work should be completed in phases by setting long-term, medium-term and short-term goals, and the plans prepared by the police department on traffic, crowd and disaster management issues should be implemented more scientifically.
Vehicles coming to Pushkaram from different parts of the country should be parked in special parking zones to be set up within the city limits, and shuttle buses should be run from there to transport devotees to the ghats to reduce traffic pressure.
Since it is estimated that about two lakh people can come by rail and 25 thousand people by bus per day during Pushkaram, it was suggested that the Railways, RTC and Transport departments should submit a comprehensive plan within a week in coordination.
The Collector said that there is a proposal to widen about 25 main roads in the town in view of Pushkaram. It was suggested that vacant places in Rajamahendravaram town should be identified and parking zones, temporary shelters, food distribution centers and cultural program venues should be set up.
There are up to 65 ghats for devotees in the Upper Godavari district. They are 2.7 kilometers long, and by expanding the ghats by 1.95 kilometers and constructing new ones, a total of 4.7 kilometers of ghats will be available.
It was suggested that special ghats should be set up near the airport and national highways for VIPs, and special arrangements should be made for the elderly, women and the disabled to take a Pushkara bath.
Since the Pushkaras are likely to take place during the rainy season, the Collector suggested that comprehensive plans be made on issues such as drainage system, stability of ghats, and safety of devotees, keeping in mind the impact of floods.
For the convenience of devotees, he ordered that advance measures be taken to coordinate the work of a special control room, public address system, CCTV camera monitoring, help centers, fire and disaster response teams, cleanliness staff and volunteers.

District SP D. Narasimha Kishore, Rajamahendravaram Municipal Commissioner Rahul Meena, DRO T. Seetharamamurthy, RDOs Rani Sushmita, R. Krishna Nayak, RMC Additional Commissioner Ramalingeshwar and other district officials participated.
