New ‘Critical Care Blocks’ (CCBs) are coming up in 24 government hospitals in the state for emergency medical services. The Health Department is taking steps to commission 11 more CCBs by the end of next month and by August 13, 2026.
These will make an additional 1,275 beds available. Officials briefed Health Minister Shri Satyakumar Yadav about the progress of their construction.
The Minister directed the officials to complete the construction of these, which were undertaken at a cost of Rs. 600 crore under the Prime Minister’s Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM ABHIM), in a phased manner by August next year.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were challenges in providing emergency medical services to patients. At that time, non-Covid cases were not getting proper treatment. To prevent such situations from recurring in the future, the Central Government has approved the establishment of 621 CCBs across the country.
Accordingly, construction of these is underway in 16 teaching hospitals, excluding Guntur, Tenali, Anakapalle, Hindupur district hospitals (3), and Narasaraopet, Palakonda, Bhimavaram, Rayachoti, Chirala area (5) area hospitals.
At present, the construction of CCBs in Nellore and Ongole teaching hospitals is almost complete.
By the end of next month, the construction of hospitals in Kadapa, Kurnool, Tirupati, Hindupur, Anantapur, Anakapalle, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vijayawada, Vizianagaram, Tenali District Hospital by March 2026, and Chirala, Paderu, Eluru, Machilipatnam, Palakonda, Nandyal, Bhimavaram, Narasaraopet, Rayachoti, Kakinada will be completed.
Each of the 22 CCBs to be set up with 50 beds is being spent at a cost of Rs. 23.75 crore (including equipment/machinery). The construction of CCB in the 75-bed area hospital in Narasaraopet will cost Rs. 36.35 crore, and the CCB in the 100-bed Tenali District Hospital will cost Rs. 44.50 crore. Every hospital is spending around Rs. 7 crore on equipment/machinery

Every 50-bed CCB
has an ICU with ten beds, a mini ICU (step down) with six beds, 24 isolation beds, separate dialysis beds, maternity beds, and a casualty ward. Heart, respiratory related cases, poisoning cases, dialysis, maternal and child health and other cases are available here.
