Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has made it clear that the goal of the coalition government is to double the income of handloom artisans in the state. Chandrababu announced that financial assistance of Rs. 25 thousand will be provided to each handloom family per year under the Netanna Bharosa scheme.
Chief Minister Chandrababu, Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, who participated in the 11th National Handloom Day organized in Mangalagiri, Guntur district on Thursday, visited the weaving workshop.
The Chief Minister explained that keeping in mind the difficulties of handloom weavers, he is implementing the promises made during the elections. CM Chandrababu announced that 200 units of free electricity will be provided to handloom looms and 500 units of free electricity to spin looms from this month onwards.
The ‘Free Electricity Scheme’ will benefit 93,000 families with handlooms and 50,000 families with power looms in the state. The government will spend Rs. 190 crores annually for this. It was the TDP that started pension for weavers at the age of 50. 92,724 families are benefiting. By increasing social pensions to Rs. 4,000, we are spending Rs. 546 crores annually just for weavers’ pension,’ said CM Chandrababu.
He praised our weavers for bringing global recognition to Indian strength, culture and tradition centuries ago. ‘Our weavers have the skill to fit a six-gauge saree into a matchbox. If the breadwinner gives us bread… the weaver taught us civilization.
Mangalagiri, Dharmavaram, Venkatagiri, Uppada, Pedana, Chirala, Padanur, Madanapalle, Nandavaram, Kodumur, Emmiganur, each region has its own uniqueness. If Gandhiji praised Padanur Khaddar at that time… the Kalankari of Padana impressed the world. The British used to take the products woven by our weavers to England and sell them there. Wearing Khaddar clothes and spinning yarn during the freedom movement is proof of patriotism,’ the CM explained.
He said that the NDA government will support handloom workers in every way, and that master weavers and artisans in the state have achieved a turnover of Rs. 1,375 crore in products. The CM announced that a handloom museum will be set up in Amaravati.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has announced that the birth anniversary of handloom weaver Surya Pragada Kotayya, who waged a satyagraha for the benefit of the handloom community, will be officially celebrated on behalf of the government.

Handloom is the sector that most people depend on after agriculture in the state. Around 1,22,644 families are in this sector, Chandrababu said.
