Telugu Desam Party (TDP) state president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao on Saturday reiterated his party’s commitment to save the Visakhapatnam steel plant run by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL).
He reiterated Visakhapatnam steel plant run by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). He said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu played a key role in saving the company from renewed privatization pressures.
Speaking at a press conference at the TDP office in Gajuwaka, Srinivasa Rao demanded that 50 per cent of the jobs in the steel plant be given to displaced families and R-card holders, many of whom have been serving the company as contract employees for decades.
There were serious irregularities at the steel plant, with some contractors, officials and a group of union leaders colluding to fraudulently draw salaries in the names of about 2,000 fictitious workers.
These malpractices came to light only after the introduction of the biometric system. The coalition government acted swiftly to remove the fake names, he said. The coalition government has declared its support for the survival and growth of the plant.
On the restructuring, he clarified that the number of contractors, which was once close to 1,000, is being rationalised to 42, one for each department. “It is nothing but propaganda to portray this regularisation as privatisation,” he said.
Again appealing to contractors, TDP state president Palla Srinivas Rao stressed that the displaced persons – whether skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled – should be re-employed under the single-window framework.
