The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways has launched several development projects in the Port Authority to strengthen the position of Visakhapatnam Port as a key cargo hub on the East Coast, which is likely to generate employment opportunities as a result.

The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, today addressed a gathering at Sagarmala Conventions in Saligramampuram, announcing several development projects at the Government of India Port Authority (VPA).
The projects include Operation & Maintenance of East Quay (EQ)-1A Terminal, which has been awarded to M/s Green Energy Resources with an investment of Rs. 130 crore. The project includes installation of two 120 tonne Harbour Mobile Cranes (HMCs) and expansion of associated infrastructure over a period of 5+1 years, increasing capacity by 3 MMTPA.
The initiative is expected to create around 150 jobs, reduce logistics costs and strengthen Visakhapatnam Port’s position as a key cargo hub on the East Coast.
The Minister inaugurated the Rs. 37.53 crore Smart Video Surveillance Project, implemented by M/s Railtel Corporation of India Limited, Hyderabad.
The initiative integrates AI/ML-based video analytics, IoT technologies and an Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) with 5 years of O&M support. Designed to be implemented within 12 months, the project will enable real-time monitoring, asset tracking and predictive analytics, enhancing port safety, operational efficiency and compliance – transforming VPA into a future-ready smart port.
Another major project launched is the Digital Health Card System, implemented by M/s TrainFather Private Limited, Visakhapatnam at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. The project, which will be completed in 3 months, will enable digital access to health records of employees, pensioners and their dependents through QR/Aadhaar-linked smart health cards.
The event was attended by Shri Shri Bharat, MP, Lok Sabha, Visakhapatnam, Shri Ch. Vamsi Krishna Srinivas Yadav, Visakha Dakshina M.L.A, Shri P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, Visakha Uttara M.L.A, Port officials and employees in large numbers.
