Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu said that no one should have any objection if Andhra Pradesh, the downstream state, utilizes the surplus Godavari river waters that are currently flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
On Friday morning, he met with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil along with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. They discussed with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil about the central government’s approvals for irrigation projects in the state and the release of funds for various projects, and made several requests.
He said that they specifically requested immediate financial assistance for the projects approved as part of the bifurcation promises. He stated that they also requested that a high-level meeting be held on the pending issues. He mentioned that water security is a crucial issue for Andhra Pradesh, and they appealed to the central government to make favorable decisions keeping in mind the irrigation and drinking water needs of the state.
He said that they brought to his attention the need to further strengthen the coordination between the central and state governments on the projects. Ramanaidu said that they requested that water allocations be made project-wise, and that approvals be given in accordance with the rules of the Godavari and Vamsadhara boards to facilitate their speedy completion. He said that they are not very interested in the dispute regarding the utilization of Godavari river waters. He stated that Chief Minister Chandrababu’s goal, thought, and aspiration is for the well-being of all Telugu people in both states.
Ramanayudu said that there is a need for cooperation if Andhra Pradesh, the lower riparian state, wants to utilise the surplus waters. He said that in the last 50 years, 1.53 lakh TMC of Godavari floodwaters have flowed into the sea, and in the last five years, 20,000 TMC of water has gone into the Bay of Bengal.
He said that on average, three thousand TMC of Godavari waters flow into the sea every year, and only 200 TMC of that is sufficient for the project they have proposed. Ramanayudu said that he brought to the attention of the Minister of Jal Shakti (Water Resources) the need to immediately accept this proposal and grant the necessary permissions.
The Chief Minister explained to the Union Minister the progress of the Polavaram project works and requested that the pending permissions for various works related to the Polavaram national project be granted immediately.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reminded the Union Minister that the implementation of the tribunal’s judgments regarding the Vamsadhara river dispute has not yet been fully completed. He stated that the construction of the Neradi barrage is essential for the water needs of the drought-prone areas in Srikakulam district. He said that they have requested that permissions be granted for this.
