The Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India, Sarbananda Sonowal today welcomed the Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) ‘Shivalik’ on its historic maiden visit to India at the Visakhapatnam Port.

Commissioned under the Indian flag by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), ‘Shivalik’ marks a significant step forward in India’s maritime and energy logistics capabilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said that the commissioning of ‘Shivalik’ under the Indian flag is a proud moment for the country and a testament to India’s growing strength in the global shipping and energy trade.

He highlighted that this milestone is in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Maritime India Vision 2030, which will strengthen India’s self-reliance, indigenous ownership and global competitiveness in the maritime sector.

On the occasion, Shri Bharat, Member of Parliament from Visakhapatnam, reiterated the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister to ensure door-to-door gas delivery across India, stating that such initiatives will bring the country closer to achieving universal energy access.

Visakhapatnam Port Authority Chairperson Dr. M. Angamuthu, SCI lauded its progressive initiative and reiterated VPA’s commitment to provide all possible support.

He assured that the Port will work with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to transform Visakhapatnam into a leading energy logistics hub on the East Coast.

The Hon’ble Minister also interacted with the officers and staff of ‘Shivalik’, appreciating their contribution to India’s maritime prowess.

He further appreciated the efforts of VPA in modernizing the port infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency to support the expanding energy and logistics demands of the country.

Hon’ble MLA of Visakhapatnam South, Shri Vamsi Krishna Srinivasa Yadav, senior officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shipping Corporation of India and Visakhapatnam Port Authority were present at the ceremony.
