Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a sweet message to the people of the country on the occasion of Independence Day from the Red Fort.
He announced that he will give a “double Diwali” gift to the people this year and made a key promise to reduce the tax burden on the common man. He made it clear that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be drastically reduced, especially on items used in everyday life.
Addressing the nation on Friday, Prime Minister Modi said, “This Diwali, I am going to give you a double Diwali. The people of the country are going to get a big gift. There will be a huge cut in GST on common household items.” He felt that there was an urgent need to review the existing GST rates. Modi revealed that the government is preparing a new generation of GST reforms with the aim of reducing the tax burden on the common man.
On the same occasion, Modi announced the formation of a high-level task force to expedite next-generation reforms in key areas like governance, taxation and government services. “We have decided to form a task force for next-generation reforms. Our aim now is to bring in all kinds of reforms,” he said.
The announcement from the Prime Minister assumes significance as the GST regime completes eight years in India. GST, which was launched in 2017, played a key role in unifying the country’s indirect tax system. The proposed reforms are now expected to further simplify the tax system and increase transparency. With this ‘double’ assurance given by Prime Minister Modi, citizens and business communities are eagerly waiting to see what changes will be made in the tax system by the upcoming Diwali festival.
