State ST Commission Chairman Dr. DVG Shankara Rao said that necessary steps should be taken immediately regarding the rehabilitation of Polavaram displaced persons. The Chairman reviewed the Polavaram Project R&R with the officials at his office in Vijayawada on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman inquired about the problems of the displaced persons as well as the details of the rehabilitation, rehabilitation and job creation being provided to the tribals under the ITDA.
He said that he should inform the officials about the many problems that came to his attention during his field visit to the project and take appropriate steps on those problems. Officials explained on this occasion that steps have been taken to provide rehabilitation to a total of 373 villages.
A total of 76 colonies have been sanctioned, of which 26 colonies have been completed. He advised the officials to take full measures after finding out the details of the basic facilities like drinking water, electricity, education, medical etc. being provided in the respective colonies. He said that in relation to employment generation, training in computer training, mechanical works as well as sewing is being provided, and skill development training is also being provided to 5,223 people.
He said that alternative lands have been provided to the tribals who lost their lands, and full compensation has been given to 9,249 out of 18,320 people. The chairman of the commission inquired about the provision of roads and transport facilities for the colonies established as alternatives. The people of the agency areas have a special way of life, culture and traditions, and the rehabilitation measures should be taken in accordance with that in the rehabilitation.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Deputy Director, R&R Supervisors and Senior Assistants of the Secretariat Commission.
