The state government has made key changes regarding the working hours of employees working in shops, factories and other commercial establishments in AP.
The Legislative Assembly has approved the amendment bills introduced to increase the daily working hours and allow night shifts for women. To this end, the ‘AP Shops and Establishments Amendment Bill-2025’ and ‘Factories Amendment Bill-2025’ were introduced in the House by Labour Minister Vasamsetty Subhash and they were approved.
According to the new rules, the daily working hours in shops and other establishments have been increased from 8 to 10 hours. The current working hours of 9 hours in factories have also been revised to 10 hours. However, the total working hours limit in a week has been maintained at 48 hours.
Along with this, the overtime limit of employees has also increased significantly. The overtime limit, which was previously 75 hours per three months, has now been increased to 144 hours.
As part of these new amendments, the government has relaxed restrictions on women’s night shifts. Now, women can also participate in duties from 7 pm to 6 am with their consent. However, the government has made it clear that it is the sole responsibility of the employers to provide complete security and safe transportation facilities to women employees working in night shifts.
The bill states that employees working in factories must be given a half-hour break for every six hours of work, and their total working time, including rest, should not exceed 12 hours a day.

Although exemptions have been given to small enterprises with less than 20 employees from some rules, the government has ordered that key safety rules must be followed.
